You are fairly right, I guess.
Air, sun, moon, hands, perfume, smoke, motion... are very bad for those fragile fans !
That is why the best looking fans now are sometimes those who were broken on the first day, or even before being used. And they look bright, with what we call in French slang des "couleurs p├ętantes" (bursting or exploding colors ?).
