For more info on copyright law read the Berne Convention, especially Art. 9 and 10, Title 17 of the US Code (US Copyright Law), CDPA 1988 (UK), and the German Copyright Act (albeit slightly outdated in the English translation but essentially still basically current, as can be seen in the German version).
